Facebook Interview

Facebook Interview from meaghan o'connor on Vimeo.

Pretty much everybody has a Facebook.  What people use it for and for how long people use it in a session varies. I figured Facebook would be an interesting topic since almost everyone can relate to it.
Let me start of with some basic information about Facebook. Facebook is a social networking site that was created by Mark Zuckerberg and launched out of his Harvard dorm room in February of 2004.  At first the site was just for Harvard college students but in March of 2004 he expanded it to Yale and Stanford Columbia students.
By December of 2004, Facebook reached nearly one million active users.  In May of 2005, Facebook supported 800 network colleges. In August of 2005, Facebook officially becomes the name of the site. (Before it was thefacebook.com) In September of 2005, Facebook expanded to allow high school networks.  By December of 2005, Facebook had 5.5 million active users. In April of 2006, Facebook launched their mobile feature. In September of 2006, Facebook allowed anybody to join. By December of 2006, there are more than 12 million active users on Facebook.  By April of 2007, Facebook had more than 20 million active users and by October of that same year Facebook had more than 50 million active users. Every month more and more people are joining Facebook as of February 2010 there were over 400 million active users.
During my interview I asked Brian if he has every used an application on Facebook and as he stated he only used the bumper sticker application. According to Facebook Statistics there are more than 500,000 active applications on Facebook.
I also discussed with Brian the various methods of accessing Facebook besides using the computer. There are currently more than 100,000 million active users accessing their Facebook through their mobile devices.  There are more than 200 mobile operators in 60 countries working to deploy and promote Facebook mobile products.
As I was researching what questions to ask Brian, I found some interesting facts about Facebook. (Maybe, I find them interesting because I consider myself addicted to Facebook but either way I’m sure most people reading this log onto Facebook daily to distract themselves from doing something productive.) The average user has 130 friends on Facebook, and sends about 8 friend requests a month.  The average user spends about 55 minutes a day on Facebook. So I guess Brian was right considering himself an average user when he said he was on about one to two hours a day. The average user comments on 25 Facebook content each month.  The average user becomes a fan (or now it is called like) of 4 pages a month. As I was doing this research I realized I am way beyond the average user and should probably cut back on Facebook!
I also talked to Brian about Facebook and work and whether a person should be judged by their profile. I found something similar while I was researching about Facebook and college. I found that 10% of admission officers have looked at an applicant Facebook before accepting them into college and 38% of them said they saw the applicant in a negative manner afterwards.  Basically, be careful what you put out there it could literally affect the rest of your life.

  1. I agree that people including me, are wasting their time going to Facebook and checking out what thier friends (virtually?) are doing or whatever they find interesting. I really thought the information from website you found is incredible and wonder where Facebook generation is headed to..The average user spends about 55 minutes a day on Facebook..believe or not, this is pretty good amount of time..

  2. 55minutes on a website basically doing NOTHING is definitely a long time. Sadly, I find myself on Facebook even longer than that. I wonder where Facebook generation is also headed.. I guess the only thing we can do is wait to see!

  3. While watching your video I found my self laughing multiple times. First and foremost good topic. Relevant with the recent facebook movie that was released or is being released (not sure). Personally, at one point in time I was on facebook (and pretty good at it too ex the friends, the posts, and the photos). Since deleting my account I have noticed that the amount of people that I "communicated"with has gone down. But a positive is the amount of people I still talk to (traditional methods) its been more genuine. That's whats great about this country, open for interpretation.
As for a quick side not Brian did seem like he was addicted to facebook, over an hour a day? checking your page multiple times in a day? also I noticed when you asked if was addicted he started to fidget like he was uncomfortable. Just my opinion. Nice job.

  4. I love the topic! I really think I have a problem some times! I think that I am more adicted than most people, but I also think that I have reasons! I work at the information desk in the union (generally 6-8 hours shifts at a time) and the only thing to keep me occupied is my laptop. So naturally I click onto facebook and browse around. Before you know it, 5 hours of my shift have gone by and I've done nothing.

I found out last year that I don't necessarily think it's facebook that I'm addicted to, but my computer. When I moved in with my boyfriend we didn;t have internet, so I wasn't on facebook or my computer, and i really didn;t have a problem with it.

I think it's just so hard wired now that as soon as I get on a computer, Facebook is the first page I get on, and its usually always open in the background (even right now it's open in a different tab)

I don't know what facebook is going to do to us in a few years. I'm sure something will come along and replace it and we'll eventually laugh at it like we laugh at Myspace.

Your post and video were very good. The topic was certainly very relavant and I think it can get a lot of people talking! Great job!

  5. I think this is a really great topic since almost everybody has a facebook and atleast half of those people are addicted to it including myself. Although, I wouldn't say I check it 40 times a day I do chekc it often and since I have the application on blackberry I am even more tempted to go on it than I was before I got this phone. I thought it was very creative how instead of talking you made it look like you were typing the questions and thought it went along very well with your video topic. Your tranisitions were also very good I thought. I also agree that you should watch what you write on yuor facebook because of employers, and I agree with your friend Brian that I don't think it would be fair for a potential employer to judge someone based on somebodys facebook page because just because they have certain photos up or information doesn't mean they wouldn't make a good employee.

  6. This was the perfect topic choice being that facebook has become so relevant in our lives, and it's the focus of our next assignments. I don't really see Facebook as a bad thing though. We're the technology generation, why sholdn't we use it to satisfy our need for instant gratification.
Also, your video was good (especially the editing) but there wasn't any B-roll in it. Also who is the person in the video? You didn't really explain that. But otherwise, really nice job.
